How to steam steamers?
Steaming steamers, also known as soft-shell clams, is a simple process. Here’s how to do it:
- Rinse the steamers thoroughly in cold water to remove any sand or grit.
- Fill a large pot with about an inch of water and add a steaming basket or rack to the pot. Make sure the water doesn’t touch the bottom of the basket or rack.
- Bring the water to a boil over high heat.
- Add the steamers to the basket or rack, making sure they are in a single layer and not overcrowded.
- Cover the pot with a tight-fitting lid and steam the steamers for 5-10 minutes, or until they open up. You don’t need to add any additional seasoning or flavors to the water, as the steamers will release their own natural juices.
- Using tongs or a slotted spoon, remove the steamers from the pot and serve them immediately, with melted butter or a broth-based dipping sauce on the side.
Note that any steamers that don’t open during the steaming process should be discarded, as they may be unsafe to eat.
